Foreign spies arrested in North Korea!

September 5th, 2007 · 4 Comments

Update: Checkout Richardson’s analysis at DPRK Studies. The arrests may be a less than subtle warning to the North Korean population that liberalisation only goes so far…

………………………

Xinhua has reported that North Korea has arrested several foreigners for spying on North Korea’s military and for trying to spread democratic ideals. According to AFP:

A spokesman for North Korea’s National Security Service told reporters in Pyongyang that the unspecified number of foreigners were caught as they were conducting espionage activities, according to Xinhua. Several North Korean nationals were also arrested for helping the alleged spies, Xinhua cited the spokesman, Li Su-Gil, as saying.

Now this will throw the spanner in the works if those arrested turn out to be from the South, the US or Japan… But then again, nothing like a bit of a Cold War spy drama to spice up a boring news day… I’m on the edge of my seat!

They are Japanese! That is how the kidnapping issue will be solved.

No. They are Korean born American citizens. Probably trying to help people leave North Korea.

Your poll is way off. So are your comments. There was only one foreigner. It was a plumpish German businessman named Gunther.
