This is not going to go down well…

WASHINGTON (AFP) — Israel recently carried out reconnaissance flights over Syria, taking pictures of possible nuclear installations that Israeli officials believed might have been supplied with material from North Korea, The New York Times reported Thursday.

A US administration official said Israeli officials believed that North Korea might be unloading some of its nuclear material on Syria, the Times reported.

“The Israelis think North Korea is selling to Iran and Syria what little they have left,” the unidentified official was quoted as saying.

Now I’ve heard it all. North Korea is undertaking complete, verifiable, irreversible dismantlement (CVID) and has the receipts to prove it!!! But all may not be as the NY Times claims… rumours are after all the currency of the nuclear trade…

brand.JPGApparrently, this rumour started from North Korea’s favorite ex-UN Ambassador for the US, Mr John Bolton, according to the BBC:

The former US ambassador to the UN, John Bolton, in a recent article in the Wall Street Journal, raised the possibility that Syria is sheltering technology or materials relating to North Korea’s nuclear programme.

The BBC went on to explain that after talking to John Bolton, he would not go further into his sources for the information. Obviously, if such information were verified, diplomatic efforts with North Korea are going nowhere. But is it true?

Now, it is hard to argue, North Korea is not John Bolton’s favorite state. As a UN Ambassador, John Bolton was about as diplomatic as Yosemite Sam, when it came to dealing with Korean peninsula issues. Does the rumor end with Yosemite John Bolton’s speculation, or will further evidence come out???

It is too early to say that it is a rumor. Actually, to say that John Bolton started the rumor is actually starting a rumor. John Yosemite Bolton may be proven correct and YOU will be the rumor maker!

John Bolton has done for relationships on the peninsula what the Casio keyboard has done for classical music. Very little.

Of course, much in the same way that the Casio keyboard was able to render your average tone deaf, mute, deadshit, a self-appointed one fingered authority on all things Mozart, Bolton has become a seasoned jazz musician. He likes to share the stage with some of the greats. And his instrument of choice? A one-note pitch pipe. In fact, I think he’s just arrived on stage for a set now….

Are we forgetting Bolton’s little performance in 2003? For those of you who’ve been following his career for long enough, you know what I’m referring to. For those of you who don’t, google Bolton and 2003. Enough said….

Nuclear Cooperation between North Korea and Syria…

Yesterday news broke (though for some reason the buried by the NYT in a story about an Israeli air strike on Syria, as Joshua notes, rather than front page news of its own) that Israeli intelligence may believe that Syria purchased nuclear material fro…

The WaPo is reporting that the Israelis supplied imagery and other intel on this. While Mossad can’t (IMO) be completely trusted, I don’t see any evidence that Bolton is in any way responsible for the current reporting.

As always, very precise Richardson. He is not responsible, per se. However, he does reference Syria-DPRK cooperation, in relation to the current diplomatic efforts was in his 31 August piece in the WSJ. BBC diplomatic correspondent Jonathan Marcus questioned him regarding this, in light of the Israeli strike, and he was not forthecoming on the source. Perhaps some eager journos or Mossad spin-doctors taken this tid-bit and run for the goal?

I don’t find such speculation very useful and will wait to see if it’s the very well-known missile cooperation, or something on a different level.

My speculation or John Bolton’s??? ;)

Speculation on the North Korea-Syria Nuclear Connection…

Until more intelligence is made available on this situation, I remain highly skeptical of North Korean-Syrian nuclear cooperation, which would clearly cross lines that the Bush administration – which has let Pyongyang slide on recent deals – could …
