The ROK Defense Ministry has announced that defense chiefs from North and South Korea will meet during 27-29 November in Pyongyang.
ROK Defense Minister Kim Jang-soo and DPRK Vice-Marshal Kim Il-chol (also Vice-Chairman of the National Defense Commission), will discuss implementation of the Declaration for Development of North-South Relations and Peace and Prosperity, agreed to at the South-North Korea Summit 2-4 October.
The meeting is highly significant and could potentially set in motion a ‘tangible’ reduction in the security threat. Opponents of the Sunshine Policy in its various forms have often rallied against reconciliation on the basis that such efforts have not led to any reduction in the actual threat posed by North Korea. Could this meeting of Defense chiefs result in an agreement to reduce the threat of conflict?
