Look up the economic studies of Rüdigger Frank. Granted, economists are bound to put more weight on economics than anything else but he effecitvely points out that those economic differences (in particular, labor utilization) are more "insurpassable obstacles" than "stumbling blocks" I wouldn’t bet on it.
