Osteoporosis Treatment Guidelines

Maintaining bone health is very important in order to avoid osteoporosis and this can be done through a good diet and regular exercise. There are some who are more vulnerable to osteoporosis and such people should make sure that they keep bone density loss under control.

Bone density testing

Bone density testing is a good way of checking out how you stand as far as the health of your bones is concerned. From these tests, one would receive, what is called a T-score. Ideally, the T-score should be -1 for someone to be called normal. If it is -2.5, then a person is said to have osteoporosis, where the bone mineral density is abnormally low making the bones vulnerable to fractures. Such people should follow treatment guidelines for osteoporosis, which involves a mix of healthy diet, regular exercises and medications in some cases.

Screening

There are osteoporosis screening guidelines where patients go through dual energy x-ray absorpimetry and quantitative ultrasound of different parts of the body. Some groups like women, those with high alcohol intake or certain races are more vulnerable to osteoporosis. There are treatment of osteoporosis guidelines too where routine screening has to include women who are above 65 years of age in particular. Similarly, it also extends to postmenopausal age women who are at similar risk. The guidelines also suggest that those with thin frames or with a family history should go through tests in particular.

Women after menopause are highly likely to suffer from fractures due to osteoporosis. Postmenopausal osteoporosis can be handled through annual treatment too. Osteoporosis infusion treatment is also a good choice, where patients are given intravenous infusions and drugs like Zometa to make the bones stronger. Plenty of fluids should also be administered along with supplemental vitamin D and calcium. Two infusion treatments available include Ibandronate under Boniva brand name and Reclast, which is a brand name of zoledronic acid. There are vitamin D treatment guidelines as well mainly because vitamin D is very important to prevent osteoporosis. It can also be obtained from natural diet that includes Swiss cheese, salmon, sardines, non fat milk and eggs.
